The torment of the political life. Survey that cabinet table: each person is confronted with near impossible portfolios without the means to do what they understand is needed.

Their inheritance was more disastrous than anticipated: they were left with traps, dishonest traps and gaping holes. The EU departure is emerging as more economically devastating than foreseen, resulting in the loss of the exchequer £80bn annually.

The Challenges Mounting

They suffer from bad luck: the Trump destroyer landed on their watch. What greater disaster than a jail staff member setting free a rejected refugee sex offender? Channel migrants feel relentless.

An ill-advised deputy leadership election at this moment was destined to give the Labour leader a difficult time. The minimal electoral backing at the Welsh parliament byelection might not even be their worst performance.

They anticipate criticism, but they're only human. Frequently, the Labour MP courageously expresses what all can see: that we're experiencing "deep disillusionment in this country at the moment" and "a growing sense of despair about whether anyone is capable of turning this country round".

Public Opinion Baffles

Yet, even so, the present hostile state of voter perception is perplexing and alarming. The Labour leader is the most disliked prime minister in history. Truly?

He is a respectable, earnest individual of positive aims, devoid of unwarranted superiority or ego. Contrast this with the Conservative leader, the brief Conservative leader, or the casual assumption of the former Conservative leader, each achieving minimal to warrant arrogant assurance.

Governing Difficulties

But, say the people, the current PM is poorer. As the nation's leader, he's short on personal magnetism, they say: more importantly, he lacks governing flexibility, innovative approaches or instinct for where the wind blows.

The party erred over cuts for retirees and individuals with special needs, contrasted with spending increases in other areas. Unclear about their core constituency, the party has left positive initiatives unheralded, from working rights to environmental funding, new towns and training opportunities for the next generation.

Governing Philosophy

Numerous close advisers still think conservative-leaning voters requires courting, when almost twice as many voters have moved leftwards since Labour took office. Survey specialist the renowned analyst warns them to abandon courting Reform voters: they've departed.

Keir Starmer is struggling; the evidence is clear when pollsters suggest no individual might recover from these record-low ratings.

Yet, during unknown circumstances of remarkable instability, history may be no guide. Starmer pulled Labour from the aftermath of the previous leadership state of despair that political analysts claimed couldn't be fixed in one term.

Future Possibilities

Would anyone else achieve superior results, or are we experiencing an almost impossible to govern, never-content citizenry? Any government may be rejected just as rapidly after taking office, however great its landslide victory, only if it appears bearing quick fixes providing significant resources for stricken public services and empty private purses.

Unsurprisingly, anxiety among MPs will make conversation regarding new leadership rife if the spring local elections go as badly as predicted – or, some suggest, earlier.

Potential Solutions

Here's ministers' paradox: The party's sole opportunity resides in hopelessness. Assume they will be overwhelmed anyway, so use this massive majority for four more years to pursue their inherent social democratic instinct: make radical tax reforms, increasing government income.

Anticipate defeat subsequent votes, so do everything now. Disregard popularity ratings and focus groups; allow citizens to observe genuine commitment. The sole method to rebuild credibility is to implement openly what they believe most just and equitable.

• That requires strategic electoral support for the strongest progressive option

The Chancellor rightly calls Reform "the single greatest threat" to British values. As the opposition virtually merge with Reform, a voting agreement of some kind looms.

The government's responsibility is to implement required actions to prevent it. Plan for partnerships, be acceptable to progressive partners when party affiliations becomes secondary to the fundamental boundary against an electoral threat unknown in our lifetime.

Such is an objective to overcome hopelessness.
