Why Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal European tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and determination he brought to the team.
'His Best Attribute Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize fans might be surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through local academies before entering the club's famous youth academy.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official senior international match.
He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he said after the success at Manchester.
