Tottenham Display Resolute Determination to Overcome the Hosts as Mohammed Kudus Keeps His Cool
Much was made about Spurs’ propensity to capitulate in the previous campaign, resulting in their poorest Premier League performance and the sacking of Ange Postecoglou. But this encounter offered further evidence of a new chapter being patiently written by Thomas Frank.
Taking on a home side lifted by an promising start to the campaign and a characteristically vociferous home crowd, Spurs could have buckled in this kind of encounter previously. Amid filthy conditions, they stood their ground to continue their positive momentum.
Extremely un-Spursy. Tottenham are developing very well now and made their class tell with strikes from the young forward and the Ghanaian star before and after a opening period leveler from the home winger their attacker.
The home team lacked nothing in fight, but Tottenham showed their quality – and considerable toughness – and definitely could not be described as unworthy victors. This was the Yorkshire club’s fourth loss in fifty domestic matches here since Daniel Farke assumed control in the 2023 off-season. Granted, the past two years were played in the second tier, but there is something special about the electric environment created at this vintage stadium.
An initial downpour gave way to beautiful sunshine when the teams came out and the home song Marching on Together was belted out with enthusiasm by the home faithful, including icon Eddie Gray in the executive seats. The man, referred to in this area as ‘a club great’, was, however, denied the chance of the Gray brothers, his great-nephews, playing against one another.
The older brother, nineteen, made a name for himself after making his debut in August 2023 before making a lucrative move to Spurs at the close of that season. His sibling Harry, 16, debuted for Leeds in the Championship last term and has been on the bench this season without making an appearance, and a hip flexor injury prevented him any involvement in this match. The Tottenham player, whose father, his father, and grandfather Frank Gray also played for the club, was one of Tottenham’s reserves, but remained unused.
Game Overview
The hosts got off to a vibrant start. They went painfully close in the 7th min when Anton Stach sent in a deep set-piece and the ex-Tottenham defender Joe Rodon arrived to head onto the outside of a post.
Spurs, with Tel selected to start instead of Richarlison, were at first sluggish, but slowly steadied themselves and Joao Palhinha fired a powerful long-range effort above the crossbar.
Tottenham then started to explore intricately and forced the goalkeeper into making a save in the 15th minute when Xavi Simons’s neat pass found Destiny Udogie moving forward inside the flank. His delivery was parried by the keeper and Spurs kept to give the impression they were able to move through the gears when the opportunities arose – and so it proved in the 23rd minute.
The Uruguayan regained possession on halfway and passed to the attacker, whose smart pass into the right channel allowed the striker to drive at the backline. He hit a powerful shot that took a deflection off Pascal Struijk and flew past the goalie.
The home side almost created a quick response, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin shot wildly over the crossbar from within the area. They were back on terms, though, in the 34th minute when the midfielder’s strike was saved by the keeper into the path of the winger, who tapped home from under six meters.
Opportunities continued to multiply at the opposite side for Tottenham, who were always lively on the break, and on the stroke of the interval the winger’s cross was greeted by the forward, whose header struck the bar.
It proved a lucky escape for the hosts, who were unchanged for a fourth straight game, but they edged possession during the first half and almost gone ahead shortly after the break. Calvert-Lewin’s driven strike was well saved by Vicario before Stach’s swung ball across the front of the net failed to find a team-mate.
Failing to convert their opportunities, Leeds were punished when Kudus stole the ball from the defender and cut inside before striking a low-driven, shot that once more deflected off the unlucky Struijk and found Darlow flat-footed.
Tottenham stayed threatening on the break, but the opposition were prevented a dramatic equaliser in the 4th of 6 stoppage minutes when substitute the attacker’s shot was superbly tipped wide of a post by Vicario and the defender went close moments with a headed attempt.
