The White Sox Sign Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Multi-Million Dollar Deal.
In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the high-profile player.
Deal Structure and Incentives
The agreement includes a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to compensation of sixteen million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.
Notably, Murakami's compensation can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for being named the league MVP award.
- $500,000 for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- $250K for ranking fourth through 10th.
- An identical bonus for being named the ROY honor.
The agreement includes that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his consent and makes him a unrestricted player at the end of the deal. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.
Transfer Payment and Team Legacy
As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows get a additional payment of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to play for the White Sox, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami while both were in Japan.
Career Highlights
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 soon, joins a emerging lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a 60-102 season, placing last in the American League Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.
Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, breaking the all-time record for a player in Japan formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's coveted Triple Crown.
His last year was shortened to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with recording 64 times, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in nearly 900 games. Initially playing primarily at first, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.
International Pedigree
Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending double that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a come-from-behind one-run win. The very next day in the championship game against the Team USA, he slugged a game-tying shot in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.
The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be officially presented at a media availability on Monday.
