The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the popular program coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates surrounding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
