The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
