Sweden Squad Announcement: Alexander Isak Selected While Viktor Gyokeres Omitted
The striker joined Arsenal after leaving Sporting in July
Gunners striker Viktor Gyokeres has been omitted in the new manager's initial Swedish national team selection, whereas Reds striker Alexander Isak secured a place
Gyokeres is scheduled for additional medical tests in the coming days amid worries of a thigh issue in the Gunners's English top flight triumph against the Clarets on Saturday
The 27-year-old missed Arsenal' European victory versus the Czech side earlier this week
Isak Returns
The Liverpool striker, who hasn't featured from late October because of a groin injury, has been chosen for the World Cup fixtures versus Switzerland (15 November) plus Slovenia (18 November)
Other England-based Selections
- Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall, currently rehabilitating after a head knock
- Magpies winger the Swedish international
Both athletes were included in Potter's Premier League contingent chosen under former multiple English clubs coach Graham Potter
The New Manager's Hiring
Potter was appointed by Sweden first on a short-term basis in late October, less than a month after he was dismissed by West Ham
Previous boss Jon Dahl Tomasson was fired after Sweden's defeat to Kosovo in mid-October, an outcome which rendered straight qualification from Group B unattainable
Present Situation
The Swedish team are currently last place of Group B having only a single point from their opening four games
Should they fail to secure second place, there remains a chance they might take part in the World Cup play-offs due to thanks to their showing in the most recent UEFA competition
