A high-ranking Russian general has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The attack happened on Monday morning when an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle detonated, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.

Authorities mentioned that one theory under investigation suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has remained silent.

Scene of the Incident

Personnel have been sent to the site, which is said to be in a southerly district of the capital.

Accounts suggest the detonation happened in a vehicle lot adjacent to a residential building.

Pattern of Assaults

Since the start of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military personnel have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This latest event comes after other high-profile incidents, for instance:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a bomb hidden on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a Ukrainian source earlier linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are rarely officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.

Hostilities has been marked by clandestine operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death continues to be underway.
