Police Begin Detaining Protesters at Pro-Palestine Group Protest
Arrests have started in Trafalgar Square at what may be the largest demonstration so far against a ban on the banned group Palestine Action.
Police began arresting demonstrators at the silent vigil in support of the group, which has been classed by the British authorities as a terrorist group since July this year.
The organisers, the advocacy group, had earlier stated they expected the turnout to be higher than previous protests, with over 1,500 individuals expected to participate, potentially beating an arrest record set at the 1961 protest against nuclear weapons, which was held at the identical site in the capital.
The police force also reported six individuals were detained in connection with a sign hung on Westminster Bridge in solidarity with the proscribed group.
Authorities stated: “Officers were quickly on scene, the sign was taken down and the six people involved have been arrested for supporting a proscribed organisation.”
The demonstration went ahead despite the political leader urging protesters to call it off to “honor the sorrow of the UK Jewish community”, while community leaders called the action “phenomenally tone deaf” following Thursday’s killing of two individuals in the terror attack on a Manchester synagogue.
