NY Introduces Online Platform for Citizens to Share ICE Images After Detentions of Four American Citizens

New York state AG has introduced a recent digital platform urging residents to share visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement across New York. This step comes just a day after a major ICE raid shook Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting large-scale demonstrations.

American Citizens Detained In Enforcement Action

A lawmaker disclosed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were detained and detained for "about 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Protests broke out in NYC on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Each citizen deserves to exist without intimidation," the AG declared in a release.

"For those who saw and captured immigration enforcement during the raid, I urge you to provide that evidence with the authorities. We are pledged to assessing these reports and determining any violations of law."

Submission Process

The portal provides options to upload photos and videos of the incident, plus a field to note where it occurred. Before submitting, users must mark a checkbox that confirms that "the office could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, including in a court case or government document."

Information about the Manhattan Operation

The enforcement action, which onlookers say included dozens of government officers, took place in a well-known district of the city where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are regularly available en masse – typically to visitors.

Footage of the operation show multiple hooded and equipped personnel securing and holding a person, and pushing back witnesses. Masses of locals pursued the officers down the sidewalks. An armored truck was noticed moving along the urban roads.

Political Response

In a midweek briefing featuring the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four American citizens were detained by ICE for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be detained for without cause." He noted the persons were released on the following day with no legal action taken.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," he remarked. "This is a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is purely a pretext to incite violence for the government to deploy the military to halt violence that they themselves caused."

Widespread Condemnation

Anger over the federal action rapidly grew – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls condemned the operation, including Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Yet again, the federal government chooses heavy-handed tactics that create fear, rather than security. It has to end," one mayoral candidate wrote.

New York City advocacy organizations expressed outrage too.

"ICE descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, hooded officers and protective equipment to go after street vendors trying to make a living. This raid had no connection to citizen protection and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," said the head of a major immigrant coalition.

ICE Policies

Official guidelines bans the holding of citizens and the agency has claimed it will not arrest or detain citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has revealed that numerous citizens have been held against their will by ICE since the beginning of the existing leadership.

Ongoing Trend

Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in New York and nationwide this year.

A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the initial documented operation on an refuge facility of the present government. Rallies targeting immigration enforcement are commonplace including accusations of force and cruel conditions.

Latest, a submission provided by advocacy organizations claimed inadequate care of women with child in ICE facilities.
