Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

An recent acronym surfaced a couple of months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is specific to Gaza, according to doctors including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for physicians to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their whole family. But, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy in scores of doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that violations are ongoing. The Israeli government has denied these accusations, consistent with how it denies everything it is accused of. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, apparently, is what unity looks like.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is completely different.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it was formerly known for. An institution that once promoted peace has devolved into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
