Biden Bowl, Anyone? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Charity
Passing on unneeded gifts might be seen as somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Auction
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. This unusual assortment reportedly features items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold to the highest bidder by a Italian art dealer. The specific date has not been finalized, although the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the revenue benefiting non-profit organizations.
Storage Room Treasures
The presents are currently stored in a storage room on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. Sources state that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been sitting unused for years.
The full gift list is yet to be made public, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The discussion centered on whether a legal value limit was being followed. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.
A Global Assortment of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A pottery dish from the former US president.
- A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Various other items including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, particularly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.
This charitable initiative symbolizes a unconventional way to handle the protocol gifts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
