Nearly thirty million individuals in the United Kingdom who bought an Apple and/or Samsung smartphone between 2015 to the year 2024 might be entitled to about 17 pounds per person in the event that a consumer watchdog wins in its legal action against the US corporation Qualcomm.

Trial Commences Today

The consumer group is taking the tech giant to the specialized court in London this week.

The case involving the watchdog and Qualcomm is projected to last over a month.

The group is accusing the tech firm of restrictive behavior.

It claims that the company compelled Apple and Samsung to pay high fees and licensing fees for critical mobile hardware, which then pushed up the cost of those smartphones for buyers.

Key Points the Trial Will Examine

The trial commencing on Monday will look into whether Qualcomm held control and, should that be the case, whether it abused a powerful stance.

If the advocacy organization is successful in its claim, there will be a second stage aiming to obtain 480 million pounds from the tech firm, to be divided between an approximate twenty-nine million British phone owners affected.

The organization is seeking damages for all affected Apple and Samsung Electronics smartphones bought between the start of October 2015 and January 9, 2024.

The group estimates this would probably amount at around 17 pounds per person.

Earlier Allegations and The Firm's Statement

Qualcomm has previously said the claim has "no foundation".

A similar claim against Qualcomm is currently underway in Canada, and the firm has also previously been penalized by the European Union for anti-competition violations.

The Federal Trade Commission in the America took legal action against the corporation for unfair practices in the way it sold rights to its patents back in 2017, but had its legal action rejected in the year 2020.

The head of the organization stated: "This legal action is a huge moment. It demonstrates how the collective strength of buyers - supported by us - can be used to require the biggest companies to account if they misuse their leading role."

The firm is one of the leading manufacturers of handset semiconductors and has encountered claims about restrictive conduct before.
